My wife has a Sony Vaio,(3 years old runs xp home on pentium 4) Can I install a new mother board more ram and new CPU even if it's AMD based? I don't want to loose anything, is it worth the risk upgrading this way?

A new motherboard is basically a different computer entirely.

Usually not that cost effective to upgrade in piecemeal fashion

"I don't want to loose anything,"

What do you mean by "anything"?

If you change the board, you'll have to reinstall XP. And if the disc that came with the Sony is a recovery disc, you can't use it.
