I have an older Intel board, 850GB which needs an update to the BIOS. I found and downloaded the correct file from Intel.com but now need to know how to install it.?? I know this is probably quite elementary for most of you but I could sure use some help...i'm a novice at this. Also, does anyone know if this will allow me to connect USB 2.0 devices at the right speed. Everytime i connect my ext HD it says connecting to a slower USB, but i've been told this computer supports USB 2.0, just cant find how to turn it on. I saw instructions for switching to high sp USB in the BIOS but couldn't find the option. Hoping the updated BIOS is the answer...HELP!

Get a PCI based USB 2.0 card. The Intel 850 GB has USB 1.1.This is the safest way to USB 2.0 and it is inexpensive.
The card is sold with a cdrom carrying all the drivers you need. I have used this avenue many times with success on Pentium I or better computers.
If you really intend to keep the computer working, don't flash it.You should be more suspicious about hardware considerations that may lead to a disaster.Good luck.

I agree with Petit Jean. I would be very surprised if a Bios update converts a motherboard from USB 1 to USB 2.
Do yourself a favor BACKUP!

The Intel 850GB is an old socket 423/RDRAM board & doesn't doesn't have the necessary hardware to support USB 2.0. A BIOS update isn't gonna help. You're gonna have to get a PCI card as recommended above.

If you have the original XP version you must update it to at least SP1 to support the recognition of USB 2.0 in Windows XP.
Whenever you run Windows Setup from scratch you must load the chipset drivers for the mboard after Setup has finished so that Windows has all the proper information about the mboard and its hardware support, including its USB support. It sounds like your mboard has USB 1.1 hardware support only, but if it had/has USB 2.0 support, it is important to load the chipset drivers or the USB 2.0 support may not be recognized.

XP SP2 or XP SP1 will not give you USB 2.0 support if the mobo is built for USB 1.0! I second jam's post number 3.

If you have a USB 2.0 card in a PCI slot, SP1 or later will support the USB 2.0 on the card in Windows regardless of whether the mboard has USB 2.0 support, as long as the drivers (actually *.inf files in most cases)for the card have been installed, or the controllers on the card may be automatically detected and supported.

"SP1 or later will support the USB 2.0 on the card in Windows regardless of whether the mboard has USB 2.0 support"
But a motherboard already supporting USB 2.0 fundamentally negates the need for a USB (2.0) PCI card, and otherwise makes its purpose a moot point altogether.

If Petit Jean's info is correct, Carlos's 850GB mboard does not not have the hardware support for USB 2.0 and he would need to obtain a USB 2.0 card.
