I solved the problem with the DELL 4700 SATA running hot (72°C/160°F) and slow.
The slow I/O issue (2MB/sec) is evidently a chip defect, rejecting any driver update. Tested the HDD on another controller and got godd I/O of around 48 MB/sec. Plugged in cable on second SATA port (-2) and all works fine!
The heat issue is due to a poor design not allowing air flow around the HDD. Installed a little fan on top and was able to reduce the HDD temperature to more acceptable levels of about about 45°C/113°F
