It's not a good idea to update the bios unless you have a very good reason for doing so. Problems can occur that can render your motherboard useless.

But that said, when updating the bios from command prompt you need to boot from a floppy disk, cd or maybe a flash drive if you can get it set up right. On that boot disk you want only the OS system files and the upgrade files. You don't want any memory management drivers loading. I generally use windows 98 dos system files as only 3 files are needed.

However if the support site for your motherboard has bios update downloads and if they are set up to be installed via dos (rather than in a windows session) there should be specific instructions there on how to do it.

What is the make/model of your workstation? If custom built, what is the make/model of your motherboard?
Agreed with the above poster, not every motherboard can have its BIOS updated from within the OS.. You may need to boot to floppy or flash drive and update the BIOS either from a special boot menu or via DOS. The only way to tell what your workstation (without remotely examining) is capable of is to provide those specs.

Thanks for any input.

I quite agreed with the statement "It's not a good idea to update the bios unless you have a very good reason for doing so" but in case there is a need to do BIOS upgrade either as a requirement due to a new system deployment, application installation or using new hardware on legacy PC caution has to be taken.

1. Make sure appropriate BIOS application is downloaded from manufacturer's site.
2. Make sure the system is properly powered and there is battery backup in case of any power interruption.
3. All data is backed out.

Then you can go ahead.

NOTE: GUI applications too can be installed through DOS.
