my computer froze up, most likely because there was soo much on my hard drive. but when i rebooted it said unmountable boot volume. so i looked through the internet and i found that i should use the repair disks. so i did, i tried chkdsk /r, all it keeps saying is that the disk as 1 or more errors. so then when i rebooted again, it said ntldr not found. so i went out and bought a new 250gb hd. reinstalled windows and everything is running fine. but my question is, can i recover the files from my old drive? should i install the old corrupt hd and try to recover my files? if so how should i recover the files?

Attaching the older HDD as a 'primary slave' to the existing master should provide you that opportunity.

You are on the right track 'cept for a little clarification, you don't set the primary slave in the BIOS but you do need to set the jumpers on both HDD's appropriately.

The BIOS will automatically & correctly detect the drives once you've configured (jumpered) them appropriately.

Jumper shunts are as valuable as dirty nail clippings, no one (that I know) buys 'em......LOL

There's gotta be a better way.

Your new drive should have a couple in a baggie when you unpacked the box it came in. Have you checked?

As the moment, I do not see anything to the contrary.

One thing I'll like to add is that, you *may* have to take ownerhip of the data on the older drive in order to have access to them.

There are certain user access rights and privileges that surrounds ownership of files & folder directories in XP. It's more of a security feature than anything else and only becomes an inconvinience sometimes when adding, swapping or changing disks.

I wouldn't worry about it because it's easy to circumvent.

But how do you do it? I didn't realize it would be an easy thing to do, but I'm in a similar situation and do need those files!

For some reason the computer is reporting the drive as 37.27GB and 10MB. The most likely reason for this is that the drive is damaged. Can you access the drive in My Computer, if you can I would copy all the data as quickly as possible. If you cant, you may want to try using some software to either copy the data off, Norton Ghost or a similar program may work (that's what I would try first) and/or use some software to try to fix the disk like chkdsk.

Here is a list of free software that may be useful:

http://www.freebyte.com/filediskutils/#datarecovery

scroll to "Free Data Recovery Tools"

TestDisk looks quite good although i haven't used it myself.

Try to avoid performing any action that writes to the disk until you've got your data back.

I'm not sure about the integrity of 'free' data recovery tools but don't be disappointed if you do not get the desired result.

As suggested above, recover whatever you can from the disk. Once that is done write zeroes to the drive (Western Digital) has a program for that procedure, repartiton & reformat it and hopefully you'd be good.

I agree with Sabertooth. If you have found a program that works, i would obtain a trial or full version that enables you to complete the recovery.
