Comment:

I built my family a new computer that uses an Athlon XP1700+, but the motherboard only natively supports up to a 1600+. After installing the 1700+, the POST showed it was an "unknown CPU type." I remembered that there was a BIOS update is available that allows it to see the 1700+ for what it is, so I downloaded it. I flashed the BIOS with the latest update (I think it flashed, anyway) but I'm still having problems. I dont even know if flashing the BIOS worked before the POST screen scrolls before the monitor fully starts up.

Also, my computer wont boot up without clearing the CMOS first. If I clear the CMOS, the computer will boot up fine, but if I try to restart the computer, it will just hang after power on but before the POST starts.

I've searched all through Google but could not find anything helpful. The motherboard is an Epox 8K7A, revision 1.1.

Run the BIOS update again. This board is more than capable of handling this CPU.

Check your manual for any jumper settings.
How many watts is you Power supply??

320W PSU. I've already tried flashing the BIOS twice.

I heard that the 1700+ is set for an 11x multiplier, so that's what I set the board to.

Set the board to auto the processor. it sounds like a processor misconfiguration

also to see the screen just soft reboot the machine after the beep (ctrl-alt-del),

The board's multiplier was set to Auto before I switched it to 11x.

I've also tried Ctrl+Alt+Del, but my system freezes before the POST starts.
