Solved uninstalled cd drive how do i reinstall

November 25, 2011 at 19:01:29
Specs: Windows Vista
I am visiting my sister, who hardly uses her PC. I tried to install a router, but couldn't get her CD drive to open. I read a thread on this site that recommended uninstalling the CD drive and allowing the PC to detect it when turning it back on. I did that, but now the PC doesn't detect it at all. How do I reinstall it?

Let's begin by determining whether the drive itself is faulty.

Can you boot up into BIOS? Is the CDROM detected by the BIOS?
Will the tray open/close by pressing the appropriate button? Could there be a disk stuck inside? There should be a manual release hole in the front face of the drive. Use a straightened paperclip. push into the hole to click the manual tray release.

Have you opened the PC Case to check the power & Data cables to the drive?

The tray opens and closes now, but very slowly. Since it is able to do so, I decided i didn't have to open the case. How do I get to the BIOS?

When you start up the PC there is usually an early screen with the words press *** to enter setup. Where *** may be F1/ F2, DEL or some other key.
This initial screen is often obscured by an OEM splashscreen since most OEMs don't want end users messing about in the BIOS. You can see what's behind the splashscreen by hitting ESC keyand if the screens change to fast for you use the Pause/Break key. The fact the drivetray opens/closes very slowly may indicate it has a mechanical problem.
