Subject: Underclock DDR400 to DDR333OS: Xp proCPU/Ram: 2.8ghz 800mhz FSB/512 PC3Model/Manufacturer: Asus |
Comment: I have an Asus P4R-800VM board. It has an ATI chipset. ATI blows big time. I finally found single sided PC3200 sticks to put on the board because double sided Pc3200 runs at 333mhz. Well... The great thing about the board is it just flat out can't run 400mhz system bus at all. I get tonnes of read errors when I use memtester86, and windows can't even start up. However, I know for a fact that that PC3200 can run stably on the board if it's underclocked to 333. The bios does not have an option to underclock the ram. The only way I can use the sticks is if I run them single channel at 333, and tahts kinda... Well it feels wrong. Is this anyway I can underclock the ram (there are no jumpers to do this) so that it runs at 333?

Reply: (edit)Hang on if the board has an 800MHz FSB shouldn't you be able to run PC3200 in dual channel? Are you sure you have matched pair RAM running in dual channel mode because if not you will tend to get memory errors. And FYI ATi does not blow lol. Mattmatt@webgrafix.co.uk

Reply: (edit)It always helps if you list your board model correctly. You have a P4R800-VM. Put the "-" in the wrong place & the board doesn't show up at the ASUS site. http://www.asus.com.tw/products.aspx?l1=3&l2=12&l3=28&model=169&modelmenu=1 "4 x 184-pin DIMM Sockets support max. 4GB PC3200/2700/PC2100/1600 non-ECC DDR SDRAM memory Dual Channel Memory Architecture Note: Supports one single-sided PC3200 (DDR400) DIMM per channel only" If you get errors running memtest86 at the default speed of 200MHz, the RAM is bad...regardless of whether the errors are there at 166MHz or not. I suggest you return it, or to be sure, try installing it in another system & running memtest again to see if the errors still turn up at 200MHz. Look in your BIOS for a CPU:DRAM ratio setting...changing it to 6:5 (83%) will run your RAM at 166MHz (333) when the FSB is set at 200MHz (800)

Reply: (edit)The ram is fine. I tested it at a friend's. The broad is the problem. The ram is single sided pc3200 and it does not run stably at 400mhz. Only double sided pc3200 runs stabily because it runs at 333 instead of 400 because the board can't support double sided pc3200. Which brings me to my next point. Don't put up oppinoins. This broad does in fact suck BIG TIME. ATI BLOWS. ATI X200 SUX SUX SUX SUX SUX SUX. I'm an ATI fan, but they can't make chipsets to save their lives. There is no way to underclock the system speed in the bios. There is no CPU:DRAM ratio. If there was, I would've found it and not posted this forum.

Reply: (edit)Hey, you're the friggin idiot who bought the crap board, so don't take it out on us. Maybe if you'd have done some research beforehand you wouldn't be in this mess. "Asus P4R800-VM does not offer any tools for overclocking the processor. There is also no way selecting the memory operating frequency which is always set by SPD values. As a result, we were unable to test the synchronous 200/200 (FSB\MEM) mode. With Corsair PC3200 memory fitted, the system was running very unstably (and we neither can change the latency timings nor raise the Vmem values). But with Kingston HyperX PC2700 (which is able to run as PC3200), 166 MHz (as per SPD) proved to be the only available memory operation frequency. It's quite probable that the problem is rooted in the compatibility to specific memory types, and is likely to be fixed in further BIOS versions." Did you try updating the BIOS? Did you look over the list at the ASUS site to see what some of the "fixes" are? It appears that some memory issues have been addressed.

Reply: (edit)OK JAM, NEVER POST ANYTHING ON MY FORUMS AGAIN. U NEVER HELP ME, U JUST TRY TO POINT OUT OBVIOUS THINGS. I've updated the bios, it still gives me problems. I've tried different single sided ram. Still gives me problems. GX1, here's some logic. Go screw urself. I didn't get the wrong ram. In fact I looked for ages trying to find single sided DDR400 that wasn't rediculously priced. I HAVE THE RIGHT RAM. THE BOARD SUX. I got the board for free, I just wanna make it work. And altho I may look like a jerk for posting such a harsh response, maybe instead of saying stupid garbage like "You got the wrong RAM and that is the MB maker's fault?" you should be trying to help me solve the problem, not ****ing being a wise ass ok? I'm not trying to overclock, can u read JAM? I'm trying to underclock ok. Jesus.....
