Undeletable Partition

This is a complicated Catch-22 situation but I'll try to explain it:
1. I have a blank 20GB HDD with a single Extended Dos Partition (EDP) on it.
2. I deleted the Logical Dos Partition (LDP) which was on the EDP.
3. Now when I look to see the contents of the EDP it says no LDD defined.
4. When I try to create a new LDD however, it says all space in the EDP is taken by the LDD (which I deleted)
5. When I try to delete the EDP it says I can't delete it because a LDD exists on it!
6. So I have a (supposedly) non-existant LDD which supposedly was deleted and is not defined, still on the EDP, but has taken up all the space on the EDP which I can't delete because of the presence of the non-defined LDD. Got it??
7. So how do I delete these partitons so I can reformat and start all over again? I have tried all the delete options and nothing works! Thanx

You don't state which program you're using?

Try the HDD manufacturer's software.

Use killdisk to completely wipe the disk. Take care that you apply to the correct disk as the process is not reversable. Find it below.

Or you could download and run DelPart (it's quicker). It should remove the partition.

I looked for a safe delpart download site. What is with these host sites like you linked to?

Why is delpart quicker though?

"What is with these host sites like you linked to?"
I'm afraid that I don't understand that question.

"Why is delpart quicker though?"
Killdisk takes a while to write zeroes to every sector. Delpart just deletes the partition. It only takes a second or two.

The site you linked to as a place to find delpart is one I was referring to. After looking at that site I guess it seems to be OK. Not the type of site I usually use as a link though. I tried to find delpart on the MS sites and came up empty.

I understand now what you meant about being quicker.

You will find a delpart download link on that page. Look towards the end of the page on the left side for an underlined 'Delpart'.

Thanx to all. I will try either Delpart or Killdisk, whichever works best. OBTW Jam, I wasn't using any program per se. That's part of the problem. Anyway, I failed to mention that I had previously created a primary DOS partition, loaded Win98 onto it, and then installed the extended DOS partition but I got an invalid partition message when I tried to load WinXP onto the logical DOS partiton of the extended DOD partition. That's when I decided to delete everything and start all over:>(

I realise there is a link at that site. My point was that I don't feel comfortable posting links from unfamiliar sites.

Russelltexas is not a familiar name to me. I couldn't easily find a link to delpart at a well known site. That was a surprise to me.

I guess that shows how far we have moved from the DOS environment and even the FAT32 environment.

Sorry Othehill! I didn't notice those posts were by you. I ass.u.me.d they were SKY42.

I have used that link and DelPart for years. It's perfectly safe and does the job when fdisk can't.
