Download a hard drive diagnostic tool suitable for whatever make of disk you have. It is best to run this from a bootable CD or floppy ( If your system has a FD) You can usually get a Bootable ISO that you burn to CD. Without more information about your system we cannot tell whether your problem is restricted to the harddrive or maybe something else. Faulty IDE or SATA cables, poor connections or ram problems may also contribute to your situation.

Good advice in #1 but did you use the exact command, like this?

chkdsk /f
then hit Enter key.

Note one space before /f

Note, there is a longer and more thorough test using:
chkdsk /r

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks
