I have Ubuntu 8.10 on a machine of mine for using & experimenting with. I must say i'm quite impressed with it on broadband.

Now I installed Ubuntu 8.10 on my dad's computer did all the updates and got it running in tip top shape fully updated. I then went to configure it for dialup. "he has no other cheap alternatives in his location"

I've basically gotten the box to dial out but it won't stay connected. I know it's some kind of linux issue as it connects successfully with the user name and password.
It errors Something along the lines of Ubuntu won't give out permissions to the user "Nick" to make changes on vdial? i think.

I got frustrated after hours of messing with it and gave up.

Any suggestions?

I know it's some kind of linux issue as it connects successfully with the user name and password

You should probably be asking this in the Linux forum. What type of 56K modem are you using? Linux has problems with WINmodems (notice "WIN" in the name?) so it's usually recommended to use a true hardware modem...that would mean an external serial port modem.

Well I thought when I was posting it I was in the linux section.

For some reason it asked for a sub category and it ended up here.

Any way to move this?

On the topic of this i'm using a US robotics modem. I know the win modem compatibility problems. The modem works fine dials out connects for about 30 seconds then hangs up due to error.

"Any way to move this?"

Just copy/paste it. But change the title & wording slightly, otherwise it might get flagged as a double post.
