ok so i want to upgrade my video card. Whats the best way to do the installation?

Ive looked through my bios and cant see anywhere to turn off the integrated graphics. but i am able to allocate it a small amount of memory. So should i install my new video card before removing the driver for the old one? (in the device manager)

or should i remove it in the device manager, then boot up with the new card and let windows find it?

whats the best way of doing it?

thanks in advance

Most MBs with AGP integrated graphics also provide an AGP slot for upgrade. These MBs all provide for disabling the onboard graphics. If you have a MB without an AGP slot, then even if the onboard graphics can be disabled, using a PCI based card probably wouldn't be worth doing, performance wise. I think that you are overlooking the option somehow. Look thru each option on each page. If you want to switch to an add-in card, the first thing to do is to change your display type to std. VGA. Then re-boot and disable onboard video and set BIOS to look for AGP or PCI based video first, depending on which you are upgrading to> save and exit> shut down> install new video card> boot to windows> install video drivers.

It could also be a jumper on the motherboard to disable the onboard video and use the agp or pci.

Install the new card, boot up and install the driver. Then worry about disabling the onboard adapter, if you don't want to use two monitors.

to disable onboard graphics it needs to be disabled in bios and like efabes says older boards may have a jumper.
on board graphics i have seen all had to be disabled in biosbefor the graphic card would work.

A card in an AGP slot will not work unless onboard is disabled. "me" didn't provide specs. If a PCI card is installed both can work.

Hi Me.

"Most" motherboards (last 2 - 2 1/2 years) will automatically disable the OB video when a AGP card is put into the AGP slot.

Uninstall your old driver, shut down, pop in the new AGP card boot up, install new driver, then enjoy.

It is an pci card (radeon 9000 128mb), because i dont have an agp slot :(

I know, im stupid.

Anywho, ive looked around in the bios and i found an option where you change how much memory the onboard vga gets. theres an option called Auto. in my manual it says that if a grpahics card is detected then the onboard vga will be given no memory. and if one isnt detected then it will give it 32mb.

I assume i use this option?

so what should i do? set it to auto, then install new card?

or set it to auto, remove old drivers and then install?

Set it to auto and install the new card. Windows should detect that the old card is disabled and that there is a new video card. Windows should prompt you to install the drivers. The standard windows drivers should automatically be used until the new ones are installed.
