The new battery is NOT fully charged.

If you're trying to run the laptop on the battery alone, you must plug in the AC adapter long enough for the battery to be charged at least a minimal amount, otherwise the computer will shut off shortly after you boot it, or the computer will not start up at all, when the battery alone is connected.

What you're supposed to do when you have a new battery is plug in the AC adapter and WAIT until the led that indicates it's charging goes out, which may take hours, THEN you start up the computer.

For max battery capacity, you should "calibrate" the battery

This is for HP computers but it applies to any laptop...

HP Notebook PCs - Calibrating the Notebook Battery in Microsoft Windows 98, ME, XP, and 2000

The laptop should start up fine when the AC adapter is plugged into it in any case, in most if not all cases.

If you DO have the AC adapter plugged in, then there's something wrong.

Have you, or is it possible someone else who had access to this computer...
- dropped it, or dropped anything on it, or otherwise exposed it to a physical jolt ?
- spilled liquid on it, or sprayed it with liquid, or exposed it to liquid such as rain ?

Since the computer last worked properly all the time, has there been a power failure event that happened while the AC adapter was plugged in ?

Those things are the most frequent reasons something inside the laptop has been damaged.

Laptop no video (or video problems), and battery, AC adapter, power jack T shooting.
