Subject: Trying to install SATA driveOS: WinXP ProCPU/Ram: Dual Xeon 2.8 |
Comment: I installed a SIIG SATA controller card, and attatched a new SATA drive to it. Well, I don't see the drive anywhere in the Computer Management/Local storage section. I've got the drive plugged in to a power source, and connected to the controller. According to the SIIG instructions, my controller is installed correctly if I see it in the Device Manager, and I do. What else can I do?

Reply: (edit)To know the problem more clearly, it would help if you would post the EXACT name of the Motherboard on which you have installed this SIIG SATA controller card M

Reply: (edit)I've got an Intel SE7505VB2 Dual Xeon server motherboard. It has two onboard SATA connections, that I'm already using, so I got an additional SATA controller card to add more drives. Is there something in the BIOS I need to check, or do I need to setup the drive somehow else. What's the other power plug on the drive for? I've hooked up the SATA power plug, but what's the other one on the drive for?

Reply: (edit)Hi, I take it you've installed the correct software drivers for this SATA card. Also please check Intels website as there is a BIOS upgrade realeased last week. http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df-external/filter_results.aspx?strTypes=all&ProductID=918&OSFullName=Windows*+XP+Professional&lang=eng&strOSs=44&submit=Go%21 Have you formatted the new hard drive already.

Reply: (edit)Can't format the drive if the machine can't see it. Am I missing a step here. Do I need to format it somehow first? I've tried flashing my board, and the techs at PC Club have tried flashing it. The flash program keeps saying there is some memory program like, EM366 (or something similar) and the program quits. This has happened on identical Motherboards purchase over a year apart, so it's either a problem with the board, or the upgrade.

Reply: (edit)Ok, tried something else to see if I could get anywhere. I unplugged one of my drives that's connected to the onboard SATA controller, and connected the new drive to it. Computer Management saw it and I did a quick format and gave it a name. Then I switched everything back, with the new drive attatched to the SATA controller card. When I rebooted, the computer didn't see the new drive. Then I tried the thing where you boot with the XP disk and press F6 to install 3rd party drivers. I put in the floppy that came with the card and installed it. When I boot up, I still don't see the drive. What can I do? Oh yeah, I tried flashing the bios again but I still get an error that reads: "Cannot Flash if Memory Manager (e.g. HIMEM) present. I don't know what the heck it's talking about.

Reply: (edit)Go through one more time all the steps you have already taken in the Installation of your SIIG SATA Card (Exact model unspecified in your post). Make sure your SATA card Installation has been flawless by following the manufacturer's instructions. If properly installed and if it is a PCI Card, you must see the SATA PCI BIOS during boot up. If you don't see that, there may be an IRQ prob. You may try the device in another slot. Please remember: Readers of your post may fill in blanks in your post with what they are most familiar with and not necessarily what you have installed, unless they know what device you have the problem with:-) M
