My new homebuilt pc is (still) having this incredibly annoying problem of shutting down right as i turn it on. The lights flash and most fans spin a little but a split second later it turns off again. I tried the 20-24 pin connector thing which didnt fix it (didnt think it would). Then I was told that the problem was most likely a bad thermal seal between heatsink and cpu, with the cpu overheating so fast that it auto shuts off to protect itself. So i re-arcticsilver 5'ed it but still the problem remains. One thing i notice is the cpu fan never seems to spin but that could be because it just doesnt have time to.. but if it is a dud could that be why the pc keeps doing this? And if were a bad seal in the first place, would it really shutdown in less than a second? Any help is greatly appreciated.

specs: 3.4 ghz p4 cpu
asus p5wd2 premium MB
ati pci express gfx card
aspire case w/ 500W PSU
SATA 200 gb HD
DVD drive/Floppy drive
more stuff to add if i can only get it started...

I suggest you turn off the q fan controll...

What may be happening is when the comp starts the fan does not spin up fast enough, due to the low temperature, therefore the protection circuit is cativated, it thinks the fan is not connected and shuts the rig down...

I doubt it has anything to do with the thermal paste....

Hope that helps.

Ps had similar issue with a amd stock hsf..

Q fan controll is in the bios.

If you hit the Delete key when the pc boots there should be a setting in the bios that will allow you to turn off q fan control.

Al it will do is allow the fan to spin up to its max speed on start up.

I am not sure exactly in which section but if your refer to your mother board manual it will tell you.

You will find it in the bios setup section,
Some of the Gigabyte boards have a similar option, but I have had your problem with an asus board as well.

It does sound like this may be giving grief, also make sure you have the latest bios version installed for your board...

Also yes I am relatively sure things are connected in the right spots. I tested my PSU and it works so thats not the problem. My main bet is the cpu fan because it never spins even a tiny bit like the other fans do. ANy1 know a way to test a cpu fan?

Sounds like you either didnt plug your CPU fan in right or most likely the fan isnt working. I have never seen a computer on which the CPU fan doesnt start immediatly on start up. I suggest you find another fan and try it out.

"How do you reset the BIOS without the pc being powered on?"

Remove battery with mains unpluged for aboat 5 minutes. (The batery is located on the mobo and it's the shape of a coin)

"ANy1 know a way to test a cpu fan?"

Connect it directly to 12V and see if it's spinning.

It's nice to be important but it's more important to be nice...

Sound like a real pain in theback side I know...

Some serious work is needed..

Remove the mother board and the power supply form the case, use the anti static bag and the foam that came with the board and place the board on it.

Connect only the power supply and video card to the board, the monitor and nothin else, the wire from the power button of the case should be long enough to reach the pins on the board.

Make sure they are connected to the right pins. If you get boot than you had contact between the boar and the case some place, if still no go, see if the cpu fan connector can reach any of the other 4 pin fan connectors if you have them... if not see if the cable is long enough to reach one of the other fan connectors and connect only the pins for the power, earth and rpm,the 4th wire is only the speed controll and is not necessary, the mother board manual will show you which pins are which, if still no boot remove the heatsink and fan. remove the cpu from the socket and check the pins in the cpu socket, make sure no thermal paste has leaked in there, and that there are no bent pins, make sure the surface contacts on the cpu pins are clean.

If all ok replace the cpu, the fan and heat sink, with paste not to much of it though, and make sure the cpu surface is clean, and the surface of the heat sink is also clean before adding new paste. Ensure the locking pins of the heatsink click into place when you push down on them.

reseat your ram just in case, but make sure the power is always disconnected when you do this work.

If you stil get no boot It may be that eather the board of the cpu is a dud...than you might want to take it to your local pc shop and have them both tested.

Hope that helps

I'm having the same problem with my new p5wd2 premium. Asus told me the same thing they told you "get a better thermal compound". It's disheartening to learn that this hasn't worked for you. Although my fan does spin at startup and I can almost get to the BIOS. I'll let you know when I find a fix. Please do the same if you find one first.

Arctic silver takes abour 2 to 3 days or so before it reaches its max thermal cinductivity rate.

So it will run a tad warm, but dont forget that the new p4s run very hot any way, if you can keep it bellow 45C you are doing very well indeed.

I would give my right arm to get this thing running under fifty. In fact, I only saw anything below 60 for about 5 minutes. I think the stock Intel heatsink is just not enough. The p5wd2 is a hot board apparently, and the Pentium D is a hot chip even at 2.8Ghz, the combination is an inferno. I've ordered the Thermalright xp-90 heatsink which seems to work for people, so hopefully it will work for me. But even getting it to boot at all is progress.

I would say a return to the place of purchase is in order about now...

I understand these things run hot etc but you should at least be able to boot the thing and get the bios up..

I presume you did try what I suggested above ??? There hasto be something else wrong other that heat I think.

I would contact asus by email and see what they say, but I seem to have read a number of problems with that board now, but I dont think its the bios doing it, there has only ever been one other bios release for this board since the forst release, which ususaly is a good sign.

But if you havent doen what I suggested above its worth trying...
