Trouble with second hard drive

I tried to hook up a second hard drive (retrieve data) to my PC but the computer would go to a black screen after the Windows boot screen. No error messages. It's IDE and I set the jumpers to master and slave for the second (I'm almost sure I did it right). I'm pretty sure the hard drive wasn't fried but maybe it was.. Would a fried slave hard drive cause this? or PC won't support it? Or did I somehow get the jumper settings wrong?

Did you check to see if it's listed in the BIOS?

I checked and it is listed in BIOS. Seems I got the settings right for master and slave. Possibly PSU or failed hard drive? The system I pulled it out of was having MB problems but as far as I knew the HD was okay.
If the HD was fried would it still show up in BIOS? with no error messages?
I think the PSU is a 280watt. Anyone have an approximate watt needed to power a 80GB and 120GB?
