HL2 worked fine until this random problem. I was starting up HL2 recently and an error message popped up which really confused me:

Video Mode Error
Failed to set video mode - resetting to defaults. The game will now restart with the new video settings.

I click okay. After some screen flickering the game attempts to start up again, but then antoher error pops:

Video Mode Error
Failed to set video mode. This game has a minimum requirement of Direct X 7.0 compatible hardware.

I know for a fact my direct X level is at 9C right now, exceeding the requirement. As I said, ive played the game since i bought it without this issue, so i dont know what the deal is. I have the latest Nvidia drivers for my Geforce FX 5200. Can anyone help?

Thanks

It's a very common problem apparently due to your choice of video card, drop down to the 71.89 version of the driver and it should be working in no time.
