Hello All,
I have a very weird problem. I recently discovered that I need a new motherboard for my computer, as the onboard video crapped out. After putting a new motherboard in, I now can't seem to boot into Windows. I can't even get into safe mode.
What happens is the advanced menu comes up and asks what I want to boot into. I tried both normal and safe mode and it gets to a point and flashed a quick blue screen and then reboots.
So, to solve this problem, I reinstalled windows on the same drive and partition in a different folder (/Windows1). I was thinking that if I could get back into Windows, I could run a System Restore. However, I do not see any restore points to use when I run the program.
I'm assuming this is because I am running on the installation in the /Windows1 folder and System Restore is only showing me those points. How do I access the restore points from my original installation? (/Windows) ?
Also, if I can't find a suitable restore point, can I simply copy files from (/Windows) to (/Windows1) to make a workable installation with all of the old installation's documents and settings?
Thank You ,Rob

woulda been a whole lot easier to have just installed a video card on the old board.
but, you can boot with the xp install cd, all the way to where the c: drive is listed and do the repair from there. that process dumps all system files and restroes them. no data loss that way

Actually, I tried that.... I installed a PCI card and I got the same results (video some of the time, and sometimes not at all). By process of elimination (trying new PSU, different memory, installing video card, trying hard drive in a workable system) I determined it was the motherboard that was starting to flake out. So I ordered a board and installed it.
Now, I can't seem to boot into Windows. However, before I could. I did try running the repair console and issuing these commmands:
chkdsk -d (forced a scan & didn't find any errors)
fixboot
fixmbrthese didn't do anything for me....
Is there a command to replace the NTLDR, boot.ini, and ntdetect.com system files?
would that be worth a shot?
Thanks,
Rob

I suggest that you boot from the XP CD again and run an `Install' repair. When you get to the screen where it asks if you want to Install or do a repair (Recovery Console), select Install. The next screen (I think) lets you select a `Repair' Install. All you programs and data will be retained. You will lose the MS updates.
