Travelmate 220 won't boot

Specs: Windows XP SP3, 1gb
Hi, I have been charged with sourcing some new RAM for a friend's ancient Acer Travelmate 220. When I install the 1gb of RAM (512mb X2) all I'm greeted with is a blank screen. If I swap the RAM into the different slots it's the same problem. But if I put the old RAM in, it boots up! does anyone think the RAM is faulty? Or would I need to do a BIOS update so the laptop can see the RAM?

The memory I have brought off ebay this is this:

And this is the RAM that the laptop should use off of the Crucial website:

As far I can see, the specs are the same. Any ideas?

Many Thanks

Hi, if you check on the Crucial memory selector website I think you will find that the Travelmate 220 only supports a maximum of 512 MB of RAM. And if I recall correctly, the maximum RAM may be 2 x 256, not 1 x 512, again this is something to check.

In addition to the above response there may also be a RAM chip density issue. has an online scanner that should help.

There is more to the specs on RAM than you have posted. The memory chip size is also important and the number of banks can come into play.
