Your computer is old. This means your BIOS probably won't be able to properly access an internal hard drive larger than 127GB. Win98 can't access partitions larger than 127GB either.

You have some options.

You can probably install a 120GB hard drive.

You can install an add in controller card that will allow you to use any size hard drive. If choosing that option you would need to partition that drive into partitions smaller than 127GB in order for Win98 to use them.

You can get an External USB hard drive of any capacity. This assumes you have a usable USB port. You probably don't have USB 2.0 ports so the external drive will be slow. You can't install your programs on the external drive but can store all your files on it.

What size hard drive do you currently have?

Posting n/a for your computer doesn't help.

OK, I thought you wanted to buy a new drive.

To transfer the ALL the data from the 8GB to the 20GB you need to get a utility designed for the purpose. Each drive manufacturer has their own version.

Post the brands of both drives and I can provide a link to the appropriate utility.

If you don't know the drive brands you can learn that using a free utility called SIW.exe. Download the stand alone version by clicking on the link below.

W98 does not natively support 1GB Mem, 512 is the recommended max..

You can use 1G RAM on W98SE if you do this:

Type system.ini in the Run box. Set vcache to look like this:-

[vcache]
MaxFileCache=524288

This value will reduce the cache to 512M (because 1024KB=1M) which is plenty. The whole of the 1G RAM will still be useable.

In the most unlikely event of any trouble reduce the 524288 figure a little.

some other bloke...

In addition to Derek's fix you might check this:

(Edit)
There's other considerations if you're moving the OS from one computer to another. Check my #2 here:
