how can i transfer my old hard drive to the new hard drive on the new computer. I know you can buy software to do it (i think) but is there a cheaper way to do it

The cheapest way is to use a freeware, or trial version.
R-Drive Image 3.0 (15-day trial full func.) http://www.drive-image.com/

If your old HDD has a WINXP OS, you may encounter a plethora of problems doing this.

you can try free disk copy - EaseUs Disk Copy to backup hard disk.

I predict you will be unpleasantly surprised. WIndows needs to be installed on the hardware it is running on. There are some workarounds that MAY help, but it sounds like the challenge will be daunting for you.
