Touch-pad on new laptop driving me mad!

I have a new Acer Aspire 5820T, running Windows 7 (64-bit), and I've tried to disable all of the fancy, over-engineered nonsense that the touch-pad does by default. Unfortunately, it still has one extremely annoying quirk. If I'm in the middle of typing and then move my right hand down to the touch-pad to move the cursor, it refuses to move if I leave my left hand positioned over the keyboard. In other words, when the palm of my left hand is (very lightly) touching the top left-hand corner of the track-pad, it has the effect of freezing the cursor, so I have to life my left hand away from the keyboard.

Is there any way of fixing this... ?

Disable it in bios and use an external mouse.

Why did it take me over a year to phone in a problem to ATT?

Thanks for this. But unfortunately I need to use the touchpad sometimes - that's one of the distinguishing features of a laptop, that you can use it without necessarily sitting at a table or desk.

Any other suggestions out there... ?
