Subject: Totally Disabling Onboard Video
OS: XP Pro
CPU/Ram: P4 2.8 / 1 GB
Model/Manufacturer: HP dc5000
Comment:

I installed a 128 MB PCI video card on an HP dc5000 at work, to replace its onboard card.

Apparently the 8 MB of RAM from the system is still pointing to the onboard stuff - - - can I get that back and if so where do I need to further disable the onboard card?

Thanks,

Chad

try disabling the onboard video from the BIOS. the system should automatically release the shared memory.

If you mean the shared memory amount in the bios, if your mboard automatically disabled the onboard video when you installed the card, you can ignore that, because the bios ignores that.

"try disabling the onboard video from the BIOS. the system should automatically release the shared memory."

Most, if not all, bioses do not have that selection. If the mboard is really old it may have a jumper on the mboard to disable the onboard video - if it isn't in the mboard manual it almost always doesn't have oinre

However, if your mboard DID NOT automatically disable the onboard video when you installed the card (e.g. if the mboard has an AGP slot and you use a PCI video card), you need to go into Device Manager - Display Adapters and RIGHT click on the onboard video and Disable it - Un-installing it won't work - it will come back after the next boot.
