After updating the latest BIOS (1.07A)from Toshiba, attempted installing OEM Win98 disk, but the BIOS lost the hard drive.

I believe the drive is working fine, just not seen.

The BIOS does not do a seek for the drive, as the drive addy was stored in ROM. Shows "none" in Hard Drive area. Also, the BIOS does not have a shut off for video and system shadowing.

Tosiba.com directs me to Fujitsu.com as Fujitsu manufactured the drives and has the disk install program. Fujitsu.com no longer supports their disks, and directs me to Ontrack.com where I can buy software to format the drive.

As this is a 4 year old, second hand 12" DSTN laptop, not interested in buying software to install drive (hoping there is a freeware version somewhere), when suspect the problem is really reloading drive specs in ROM...or is that what the disk install software does?

Reached a crossroad, and would appreciate instructive input from someone that has been thru this.

Do I search for freeware version of hard disk install, or search for tech specs on hard drive addy in ROM and software to update the ROM?

Have you tried changing the HD "none" to auto? Normally, the HD status in the Bios is set to "none" to prohibit the system from searching for other drives to make the system boot faster. The bios update must have changed this setting when installed it. Most of the time, this option can be changed to auto, or can to be manually configured to the specific drive. You could also try "fail safe" settings, if your bios has this option. Good Luck

I like your way of thinking, but have already tried the obvious.

When I said it shows "none", that is an info only display in setup. It will not allow me to change it.

No way to configure in the setup. The default settings dont change the hard drive display. Also there is no way to shut off the shadowing either.

From what I have read, it takes booting with startup disk, and a Fujitsu hard disk install program. Dont want to pay for that. Looking for a freeware version.
