What are the issues here? Do you need to recover data? Or just get things working again?

If you have multiple USB ports use a mouse in one of the others. Then check Device Manager to see if ALL hardware is working properly. If it isn't then remove the non working hardware listings from within Device manager and reboot.

You can do MOST things without a mouse. That means you should be able to backup your person data. Try burning to DVDR disks or copy to external drives.

Then try to restore the computer to factory condition.

If after that the hardware still doesn't work you may need to have the laptop looked at. If under warranty make a warranty claim.

Thanks for the quick response. I need to get things working again. I did try to use a mouse in the other ports, but I did not check to see if all hardware was working properly. I will try it and let you know. The laptop is no longer under warranty . . . of course. Any other suggestions?

Not until you check Device Manager.

How do you know the USB ports are toast? Did you try removing them from Device Manager? Are you running SP3?
