Toshiba laptop touchpad will not stay enabled.

Specs: Windows Vista
The touch pad on my Toshiba laptop worked fine, then one day it just quit working, and then it would work if you restarted the computer, and now it will not work at all, so I'm using a usb mouse. Someone told me to push FN and F9 together, and enable it, and each time I do that it switches back to disabled, and someone else told me I needed to update the driver, so I went to and installed one, and the touch pad still wouldn't work, and it made me uninstall the driver I had just installed. If anyone could please help me with this I would really, really appreciate it.
