I have a Toshiba notebook - less than one yr old. It worked fine for the one year, then the other day I powered it up and the screen is blank......nothing, no error message, no dim lighting...BLACK!! the computer is booting up on command and turning off by the power button......One time after turning it off and on many times the screen finally went to the login page, however that was the only time the screen worked!!! PLS HELP
You could have a burned out back light or a loose cable. If you feel confident, take it apart and check the connections. If not, take it to a repair center.
also as a side note, I think there was a power surge at my house that day....beacuse an industrial flashlight that was plugged in and charging in the same line of outlets also "stopped" working....
if it has the ability to connect and external monitor, try that first. larry
They did that at the repair shop - they said sometime it works on the moniter and other times it doesnt - which is the same thing that happens with the screen cuz today its booted up 100% screen and all - andd then after shutting down again - no screen at startup.
The repair shop suggested it was the motherboard - soo the computer was $600 and a new motherboard plus install will be about $200 they said....sooo i guess a new computer it is lol
This may be as simple as: perhaps you accidentally turned off the screen with the function key which is programmed to turn the screen on and off ... this is useful to those who wish to leave the laptop on and online, always; but do not wish to waste power on the screen ... so you simply turn off the video with the manufacturer's designated function key ... some others like to turn off the small laptop screen, when using an external monitor when the monitor is disignated as the main screen, or in clone mode. You may have inadvertently pressed the function key, which does this.
In reply to captainrix - But wouldnt that mean that the screen would never turn on unless you repress that FN key? Surprisingly the last time i booted the screen came on and went to the login page - so i adjusted the power settings to never turn off....never hibernate so now the screen is on....all the time, and wont go black untill the next time I turn it off...its completely random.....
... it might be worth entering your bios and staying in there for a while just to see if there is any difference to the screen growing darker ... <Fn> + <another key> on the top row of your keyboard will act as Function keys together to brighten/darken your screen a different key will serve another purpose and they should have some sort of icon on the keys!
... lets hope thats all it is!
