A friend of mine wanted me to fix his Toshiba Satillite laptop, the problem was that after installing a program, it somehow messed with his user account, and everytime that he started up the computer, stuff would pop up, like the loading personal settings and the password popup. He wanted to get rid of all that so when he turned on his computer it would automatcally load right into windows with any delays and having to click on anything.

Well I went and deleted the wrong thing acident, and when we restarted windows, when it asked for the password, and when we click ok it would not go into windows without a password. And he didn't have one or lost it, and the only thing that we could do, was shut down the computer.

I looked at it the next day. after he fooled around with it. The next day I saw it, it would not even load into windows. it would say missing some file after the bios screen.

I booted with the system restore disk to restore to out of box. It will start to restore than I get the Blue Screen Of Death saying, system has shut down due to changes in hardware or software. Also says a bunch of other things that I don't remember. Also a bunch of letters and numbers. And this is after we reformated the hard drive with the system disk. I tried to install a fresh copy of windows with my Windows Xp disk, it would start to copy and after a few files it will pause for about 3mins, than the same blue screen..

My friend is known to have a hot temper. So I would not be suprised if he ended up dropping, or throwing it. He says he didn't. He thinks me deleting that file has everything to do with that. I told him that has nothing to do with what the computer is doing now. I reformatted the whole hard drive (Erasing everything) and tried to restore it with the system disk or use my Windows XP disk. I told him that there is something physically wrong with that compter...

Anyone know what to think? Is toshiba laptops know to have issues?

Is your copy of XP a retail copy or an OEM? What CD does he have? Is it the original that came with the laptop?

You might want to d/l the HD manufacturer's diagnostic tools first and see if there are any bad sectors on the HD.

The cd that he has is a two disk set that came with the laptop to restore windows. I beleive my copy of XP is a OEM copy, but not %100 sure. He also had someone else look at it, and he used his disk and did the same thing..

If your XP is OEM, you can forget that. The only chance you have is his restoration CD.

I would still d/l the diagnostic program for the HD and try that first.
