Too much stuff running in backgroun

Comment:
When I bring up task manager, there is lots of stuff running that I am not using. How can I access the stuff that boots upon start up and turn it off? It is causing serious issues with speed and sometimes performance.
Or, alternatively, does anyone have any other suggestions on how to improve speed and performance. I don't want to upgrade as I don't think the pc is worth it. Thank you.
Go to Start/Run...type in MSCONFIG & click OK...click the Startup tab...uncheck anything you don't need or want to start at bootup...click APPLY...reboot

Some of the items in the start up are needed and most are not. There is a website I use to check to see what a startup item is http://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist.htm
Hope that helps
