Sir,
I have 2.1 GB with some bad sectors in drive C:. Whenever system getting strated, message displayed at bottom, it says" drive c has some bad sectors", then it automatically goes to scandisk and then surface scan, where it shows some bad sectors(clusters!). So please give me a solution to overcome this problem or is there any shareware s/w is available from net.
With regards,
K.Jothimani

The site listed below will have the utilities for mapping, marking the Bad Sectors on your HDD.Just choose your HDD manufacturer.

a low level format might get rid of them but it will wipe everything else on the hard drive
so make sure you backup important stuff before doing this
most hard drive makers provide a utility to low level format on there web pages

If a hdd has a few bad sectors, it is generally not a problem.
a) can you not find a way of stopping scandisk
b) I do not know of any program that can just remove a bad sector. There may be some, and if so I would like to know.
c) If you reformat the hdd (which means you lose everything on it) using the re-test bad clusters option, if the clusters are usable it will make them so. See DOS help for FORMAT command. I use /U option.
Good luck - keep us posted.

I found that a crappy mothboard would give me bad sectors on an OK hard drive even when I formatted it. When I formatted the same drive on an MB that is good, the bad sectors disappeared.

There are only two things you should do with
a harddrive that is displaying bad sectors,
and they depend on the age of the drive.
1. If its still under warranty, RMA it to
replace it. Don't bother with a borked
drive.
2. If its not under warranty, round file it
and replace it.
Your data should be considered too precious
to bother risking it on a flaky drive that
you are trying to get two more weeks out of.
