OK, I hope somebody can help me. When I boot up my computer with nothing connected to the motherboard except the video card, the BIOS detects all my RAM. I have four 128 MB RAM chips in my motherboard and when I hook up everything, it only reads three out of the four. What can be causing this?? It has me baffled.

ABIT KR7A-133R Motherboard
Western Digital 40 GIG Drive
Sound Blaster 16 PCI Sound Card
Mad Dog Multimedia 64 MB AGP Video Card
Hival 56 X CD ROM

Thanks

One of three things. Bad Memory stick, bad Dimm slot, or mismatched sticks of RAM.

Have a great Day

Try and install each one and see if it reads them individually.

That is an odd problem. I have an Abit board also, and have found Abit's website to be almost useless. However, you might try http://www.viahardware.com/faq/kg7kr7/troubleshooter.htm for answers. Lot's of luck! And be sure to post back if you solve the problem.

When you use the 4th memory slot you have to change all your ram to registered ram. the first three will allow you to use unbuffered ram. I have the same board.

KR7A-RAID Memory

Owners of the KR7A-RAID motherboard should note that the KT266 chipset used on the motherboard places some limitations on the memory that can be used. You have two options:

Up to three unbuffered DIMMs (up to 1GB each) to a maximum of 3GB of DDR RAM

Up to four registered DIMMs (up to 1GB each) to a maximum of 4GB of DDR RAM

and that's it! You cannot mix unbuffered and registered RAM. This is a limitation of the KT266A chipset and not ABIT and it is not something that can be changed by a future BIOS release. Registered DIMMs cost approximately $10 more than unbuffered DIMMs for a 256MB module. Note also that the memory bus is asynchronous, meaning that it runs at either 200MHz or 266MHz DDR, regardless of the FSB used.

ABIT claim that the motherboad will work with ECC memory although the ECC functionality is not supported - many people report problems with ECC memory however

Thanks for all your help, but I am unfamiliar with the differences between unbuffered and registered RAM. When I purchased the Chips, I brought my motherboard manual with me and the guy from the store said that this RAM is compatible. When I took the board back to where I purchased it from, they gave it a memory test and said it worked fine. So I can assume its the RAM. I believe it is also causing the infamous Blue Screen of Death. So can you explain the difference, when I get a chance, I will check the packaging to see if its on there.

Thanks again, for all your guys help....

Sounds like as Roamingphantom said.
You have 4 unbuffered sticks.
The board will only support 3 unbuffered or 4 registered sticks. Not 3 unbuffered and 1 registered. I would take the sticks back along with a copy of the link below.

RAM IN A KR7A BOARD

From the link, "4 DDR Slots to support 4 Registered RAM (up to 4GB) or 3 Unbuffered (up to 3GB) RAM modules".

Good Day!

I have a board with the kt333 chipset in it .The book clearly states not to use 3 sticks of unregestered ram at once .My board has 3 dimm slots. unregestered or unbuffered is slower but more stable. I would go to less sticks of 256 drr and that should work out for you if $ is a problem remove one stick
