thinkpad a31 display problems

OS: winxp pro
CPU/Ram: 256

I am having display problems with this laptop. When I boot I see the initial video during the first 3 - 5 sec of posting then it goes black. If I tap the switch on the baesel the video returns breifly "3 sec" and then goes out again....

Any Ideas,
