im upgrading my chip from a 1900 to a 2200.. not a big jump, but anyhow.. i have 3 case fans(1 80mm smart fan by thermaltake, 2 vantec 80mm stealth fans), a thermalright slk800A heatsink, and a vantec 80mm case fan.. do i really need to apply a thermal paste like arctic silver 3 or can i just skip that?

The termal paste connects the cpu with the cooler so it's a very important part. But you just need enough that it can build a thin film between those two parts so don't take too much either!

BTW:
One rule I found on the net is that every 10°C the cpu is cooler doubles it's lifetime!

That's correct. Not Ever! go visit your local Radio Shack and pick up a tube $3. It's cheap insurance. BTW, AMD does not recommend paste. They recommend the thermal patches. But I use paste on my 2000+.

FYI -- an independent test of thermal compounds found NO significant difference between Artic Silver and about a half dozen others that generally cost less in their ability to transfer heat ...
