OS: None
CPU/Ram: D945PSN, 2 GB
Product: Intel/820 PDP
Comment:

Home built. Operating system not yet installed. Upon attempting to load OS, unspecificed thermal events consistently cause automatic shutdown. Computer will not stay on for more than 1 minute. Everything inside is cool. Automatic shutdown ensues, even when a large fan used on unshielded internal hardware. 450 W power supply. 512 mb x800xl radeon video card w/heatsink and fan, 3 case fans--1 large, 2 small. 2 GBs of DDR2. Western Digital hard drive. LCD w/independent power source. 2 lights, 1 superficial fan. Raidmax case. Amateur engineer questions jumpers.

"Thermal Event"

Is that a msg on screen?

From BIOS?

Does the mobo have a temp monitor?

If at first you don't succeed, you're about average.

The heatsink is probably installed incorrectly. It might not be seated right, or you might not have applied the thermal pad or compound properly. There might have been lint, or you may have applied thermal compound without removing the pre-installed thermal pad.

Or perhaps you lowered the warning temperature in BIOS too low.

'Thermal Event' is the message that appears on the screen, after re-booting. The computer does beep a couple times when starting. Computer is at a different location, so for the time being, please explain what HSF is. BIOS is pre-programmed, if there is a temperature guage it is not yet accessible...there have been no manual software installations as of yet. I will check the processor heat sink as soon as feasible...any tips for that?
Thanks all for the advice.
