Thermal Event

CPU/Ram: 2.6/1 Gig
Comment:

Dell Optiplex - GX260. Shuts down with no notice. When the machine is rebooted the following error shows before POST:

Alert !!! Shutdown due to Thermal Event

Anyone have any ideas???

The processor fan is not running. Open up the case and have a look.

You looked inside or you can just hear them?

Not that I doubt your word it just seemed pretty quick to open the case and look at the processor fan as opposed to the case fans that you can hear.

Pretty quick to open the case? Sorry. I don't understand. The fans are running.. Perhaps I should have stated that in my original post.

Well if they are all running including the PS and CPU fan then the only two remaining options are-
hardware overheating
or
motherboard error

You can disable the heat warning in the BIOS but be warned if somthing is overheating, turning off the alarm will kill it.

Well, you didn't actually answer Jimi_l's question. Did you open the case & look to see that the fan on your CPU is working?

A "thermal event" obviously means that something is overheating...more than likely the CPU. I assume that everything was working at one time & then this "event" occurred? If you haven't changed anything that may have brought this on, it would seem that the fan on the CPU has quit, thus allowing the CPU to overheat

I confirmed the fans were running. I don't know any other way to do that other than to open the case. So, I didn't think it was necessary to specify that I opened the case. If there is another way, I'd like to know that.

Someone else helped me solve the problem, but thanks for the input.

DELL confirms this as a defective motherboard that was released in the GX260. They just replaced 4 of my motherboards.
