the screen on my laptop wont come on dell ins

Specs: Windows 7
Yesterday my laptop ( Dell Inspiron 1570)was working fine. I left it on the table overnight and switched it on this morning and although it booted it up and sounded like it was running normally but the screen remained black. I then plugged it into an external screen and it runs fine through the external screen. Do I need a new laptop screen? The laptop is only a year and a half old but the warranty has run out so any help would be much appreciated?

I assume you have tried to shut down and restart the laptop?

Does the laptop screen change color/brightness at all when the laptop is starting up?

Might be a hardware problem like the inverter. Before rushing off to buy parts I suggest your eliminate any software issues. I think laptops have keystrokes to turn off the integrated screen. Check your manual.

Try booting into Safe mode (F8 at start up).

I found one thread by Googling "laptop display stays black when booting" without the quotes that said the problem only happened with the screen opened less than 90 degrees. Lots of hits when Gooling that phrase.
