I recently posted, asking about the future or CPUs, how fast the next ones will be and how soon it will make our current ones obsolete. Someone replied to me saying:
Everything is supposed to change within the next year, the new Barton Athlons will probably be the last though DuronXP+ TB core will be around for a while. Intel so the word around says have a 4000 limit. Anyway the new Athlons will be out at Xmas and will blow the current CPU's away!
I just think this is a really interesting topic and I was curious as to what everyone else heard/thinks.

Face it, whatever is currently on the market is already made obsolete by already developed new technology that is just waiting to get into production. Since 99% of PC users cannot really even begin to utilize the potential of most of the REALLY obsolete stuff that has now been around for the last two or more years, the new stuff is a huge waste of money for all but a very very few, but a whole lot of folks will just have to have it (and buy it) because it's there.

G'day,
Yes, there is a physical law that states that a volume of gas will expand to fill whatever space it is given. That has parallels in all walks of life (if your budget is $10 a week-you spend $10 a week; if your budget is $100 a week you will spend $100 a week...)and the ever increasing race with CPU speeds and software is no exception.
Mind you, we could argue that we can do more things and I suppose that is one argument for the faster PCs. But, I agree with the previous post who stated that most people will never use even 5% of their computers capacity. We also have this need for speed. My computer is fairly old and if I hit a calculate button on Excell (for example) it might take a minute- so I get up and walk to the fridge and grab another beer... nowadays if it's not there in a second people are tearing their hair out.
Another thing about older computers- last year I designed a reticulation system for my garden. All I had around was an old XT and a copy of dBASE III+. Well, that did just fine for the controller and the scheduler. Didn't need an Athlon powered XP for the job.
Just a few thoughts.

Elric

Well according to Moore's Law, every 2 years, the number of transistors per Integrated circuit will double. Currently we are on par or or better than Moore's Law. Some people believe that this law will continue to be valid up until near the end of this decade. If that is the case, we can see these CPU's performance to continue to "sky rocket".
I think it's awesome of the technological advances we're seeing, and at times I feel people take it for granted. I personally think it's great that we are striving to push the boundaries of technology and science (even though most of it is money driven). Of course this leads into other more philosophical discussions that I'll save :)
I like to see faster CPU's going out on the market. I never buy them because they are quite pricey, but this also causes prices on the "lower end items" to decrease which I like.
With some of these KrAzY games coming out, you may need that "extra power" I mean their minimum requirements are 3 times better than what I'm currently using (Of course I'm operating on the POS system :) )
Technology is cool man! =)

Folks,
If you are going to respond, keep your responses to the question asked. The question asked has nothing to do with Microsoft and how you feel they are pumping out bloat ware. If you don't keep it on topic "your post will be removed".
This will not turn into a Microsoft bashing post and if you can't respect this I will remove the whole thread. I'm giving you folks a chance to answer a question with insight and thought as the remaining post did.
No my response to the question. I'll keep using my Intel 233MMX, AMD XP1700+ and AMD XP1800+ until I feel there is a time to upgrade which will still be with last years CPU and not the latest and greatest.

For some people, the latest is not always the greatest. No matter how fast the CPU get is irrelevant to some people. Computer is obsolete, only if you deemed that it cannot perform the job that you originally intended for it to do.(Somebody reword that sentence please). That means that you are the only one who can say that your system is obsolete. Onboard computers on sattelites that were launched decades ago don't even have the MMX or 3Dnow capability, and yet not considered obsolete as long as it still capable of serving it's intended purpose.
