Well, I just read a review at "http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_zdcgw/is_200307/ai_n9518279", minus the quotes, that says that the Trinitron-style aperture-grill monitors often have a visible and distracting faint gray line across the monitor, which is the tension wire that holds the grill in place. That doesn't sound like something I would like at all, as I'm very picky about any kind of distractions on a display anyway.

Right underneath where it says that on that page, he then goes on to say what I just noticed yesterday, which is that it's actually the monitor's display screen itself that is distorted. I noticed this yesterday when I was looking at the monitor while it was turned off and I noticed that the display screen itself was not straight, which of course eliminates all hopes of ever getting the display straight on it. He says that this is a common problem with flat-screen CRTs, which I was suspecting, but both a Compaq tech and a tech or sales person or whatever she was for that monitor with the grill thing that I asked that question to both said that it's not a common thing and that it shouldn't be like that. Just goes to show you how much the typical tech knows. That's why I come to places like this for *real* expert advice. He even says there that this problem of distortion on flat-screen CRTs is particularly noticeable in the corners, which I did notice and I believe I said in one of my other posts.

Anyway, all of this has led me to one conclusion: some things should just be left alone as they are. I mean, I never had problems like this with regular old CRTs, both television CRTs and monitor CRTs. I thought the flat screens would be better 'cause I thought that would make the picture even more even, but it turns out that's not the case.

Well, anyway, I was wondering now if anyone can please tell me what the best *regular* CRT is. Like I said before, size is not the main issue, although I would like to go no smaller than seventeen inches with at least a sixteen-inch viewable area, but my main concern is by far finding the best *regular* CRT monitor out there for picture quality and picture *accuracy*, preferably one with a very good high-voltage regulation so that it doesn't expand and contract with brighter and darker images. If anyone can help direct me to that, I would so much appreciate it. Words can't even describe how happy I would be to finally end all this BS and get a great monitor with no problems like I'm accustomed to. Multiple opinions are welcomed too. I'd like to get as many opinions on this as possible.

Anyway, I guess that's it. Again, thank you all very much for responding before.

I've always been fond of Sony Trinitons and spend a few hours in front of one almost every day.

Hands down no bull Trinitron. I have a Trinitron 19" that is powered by an Nvidia MX4000 plus from Mad Dog Media sitting in a custom built system. It's important to point out it is not just the monitor that gives you that dream picture. There's a lot to be said for vid cards and software. They all work together. A weak link in that chain will make you very unhappy.
Ask happy trinitron users...Like me.

I may be crazy, but I'm not stupid...

Trintrons do have that line.

The widescreens I sold at a sony center had 2 lines, horizontal...

about 1/4 and 3/4 down the screen.

When you notice them, it is annoying, like after that point they are screaming at you, lol! HERE I AM. STILL ANNOYING YOU!

Bad design.

And an MX4000 is a terrible card! Budget, bottom of the line.

If you want ultra clear pictures, you need to get the highest resolution you can, and a card that can benefit from it, like maybe a 9800 pro radeon, or 9700 or FX5900.

Well, I am maybe gonna be interested in getting newer video card, but as they say on TV sometimes, that's another show. I mean, what I'm talking about here is playing the good old Nintendo, Super Nintendo, Sega Master System and Sega Genesis games on this computer. For that particular computer that I'm shopping for this new monitor for, that's all I'm gonna be using it for 'cause, well, it's an older computer, and for everything else pretty much, it's better to use a newer computer for that, but this older computer runs Windows 98, which means it has DOS, which I like to use and need to use for some video games. What I'm saying is that the games I'll be viewing on that computer are older games that it should probably make no difference as to what video card I use. I mean, the one that's in there already probably shows everything just as well as a brand-new one would for those games.

But anyway, I thank you all for your responses. It does sound to me like a Trinitron thing is not the way I wanna go. I know me, and I know I would notice that line and that it would absolutely drive me crazy. I've decided I want to just go with a good old regular CRT monitor. I mean, like I said, in all the time I've seen regular CRTs, both for TVs and for computers, I've never had any distortion or obstruction problems with them.

....So...with that in mind, if anyone could tell me what they would say is honestly the best *regular* CRT out there, I'd be grateful.

Anyway, um,...I guess that's it. Thank you all again for your input.
