(talking about 20" tft not too far away, less then 1m)
is HEALTHWISE (for our eyesight) better to set it to low brightness/contrast or to make the white even more whiter.
I spend long duration infront of the TFT monitor and I can't really help it.
Obviosuly boosting up contrast & brightness makes the image crisper and nicer, even the text, but would it be wiser to set it to very low, or will it have a negative effect as one will have to strain a little more to read as there will be lower contrast between the wordings (black on white)whats your opinion?

Not sure.
My opinion would be to set it to be easy to read. There is little danger from radiation as there is with a CRT.
Some suggest that eyesight can be improved with straining, that a single easy focal lenght position let's your eyes get locked into a narrow range.
I'd take regular breaks, do a few eye focus's from near to far each break if you are worried. While you are at it limber up too.
"Best Practices", Event viewer, host file, perfmon, antivirus, anti-spyware, Live CD's, backups, are in my top 10
