Taskmgr.exe randomly shows high CPU - system is unusable

Specs: Windows XP
Dell Precision M6400 has high CPU.... I love my computer and I ride it harder than the average bear. But for the past several months, I was getting this excessive CPU issue every few days. My CPU utilization hits the roof and hardly allows me to shut everything down. It started again the other day, forcing me to re-boot a bunch of times. The symptoms seemed to improve when I undocked the laptop, but not for long. It also improved when I stopped running dual monitors. I opened the case and the fans looked pretty clean. I upgraded the BIOS and NVIDIA driver with no avail. Today I opened it again and blew out the fans with a can of air. WOOOW. Talk about a mess that flew out of there! --the problem was HEAT!? That explains why it got worse over time and why the symptoms would improve depending on the environment and how much I taxed it. This completely fixed my problem. Now Taskmgr.exe is happy and I love my computer again. I never would have thought that heat would cause task CPU to run excessively.

Good show! Heat causes everything else to breakdown, why not computers? It is good practice to blow out computer innards with compressed air every several months or so (more often in dustier environments).

MOOOOooove! OH and you're welcome!

Good. Hopefully many will read this and try the can of compressed air FIRST and possibly fix it themselves. Just remember to tell us what you have already tried to save many answers back and forth with suggestions that were already tried.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
