I have a dell dimension E520, I hit the start button - an audible alarm sounded - the monitor never activated...?

The "audible alarm" indicates a hardware problem. Is it a beep code? Mix of short & long tones? Possibly a high/low tone like a ambulance siren?

If you tell us what the pattern is, we *might* be able to point you in the right direction but generally, the 3 main errors are - bad video card, bad RAM, overheating CPU.

Thanks for the reply.............I removed the cpu cover and discovered a huge clump of dust & cat hair covering one of the main air vents.
I reinstalled the cover - turned the unit on - and the system alarm.

Is that a feature on the dell's when the unit overheats, an alarm sounds?
