Comment:

I've discovered a problem with a Windows XP Home machine where the system shuts down with out being told to. It's been reformatted twice under the assumption that it might be a virus (and b/c the anti-virus isn't up to date) and it continues to happen.

it runs Windows XP Home
P4 2.40GHz
256 megs of RAM
and is a Dell packaged machine.

I'm not sure if it's the hardware or not but I'd really appreciate it if someone could help me pinpoint this problem.

My guess would be the CPU is overheating. Check that the fan spins freely & that the heatsink isn't clogged with dust. If it is, you should remove it, clean it, & reinstall it with a fresh layer of thermal paste.

Check the power supply also. Make sure that both the input and output is not clogged up with dust bunnies, and there is a good airflow through the power supply.

Do yourself a favor BACKUP!!!

Yes Jam is right... It is most likely CPU overheating due to too much dust around the heatsink area. The system maybe unstable due to overclocking. Go to your BIOS and go to restore optimized defaults.

well the people with the problem have no clue how to over clock and I've not touched that part so I know that's not the issue but thanks for that idea.
