Hi to everyone!
I'm having this extrange issue with my computer and noone seems to know how to fix it.
Sometimes without any warning my computer shuts itself down in a second. I can't hear cooler or hd noise and all that is lighting is the little light on the front of it.
I can't even start the pc with the power button, I have to unplug it from the switch.
It doesn't shut down with the end session of windows, it shuts down all from the sudden.
It happens mostly when I play games with it (I have a 128mb video card geforce 5200), but it has happend while I'm on the MSn.
I have runned everything you can imagine to stop this, but nothing is helpful.
Any ideas?

Thanks in Advance
Diego, from Argentina

It sounds like an overheating problem. Clean the system and it's fans for dust using an compresed air can. Monitor the temperatures.

Also you should check your RAM. Download memtest86 and run it for a couple of hours.

GooD LucK!

It's nice to be important but it's more important to be nice...

Thanks for the tip. I'll run memtest.
But the temperature is ok in my machine.
CPU:41c
MB: 24c
CPU FAN: 3040
According to Asus Probe

Also I've noticed that it shut down more times I play a high render game, like lineage 2 or rome total war.
Don't know why.

Your video card might overheat...check it's temperature/fan.

Don't forget about the memory :D

Thank you all for helping me! I can't believe people care about solving problems from people that knows nothing about them.

How can I check my video card temperature? I run Asus Probe and it seems to be just fine.

I can't run memtest86! my monitor freezes whe n it gets to 70%!

Only the screen (monitor) freezes or the entire computer? If just the screen freezes does it goes to standby (the led turn from green into orange and/or blinks)?

Just to make sure you could download memtest86 again and use another floppy.

Probably the best way to check the video card temperature is to visual inspect it. Look at it's fan, is it spinning fast or just strugleing to turn? does it makes any grinding noise??

Touch it's heat sink, it should be warm, but not hot enough to cook an egg on it :D

Be carefull not to touch anything else, and make sure you discharge yourself of any antistatic electricity before you mess arround inside the PC. Do this by touching the metal case of the computer or any grounded metal object (like the pipes of your heater..)

Actually I follow your advise and saw the chip was overheated!
And so a friend installed a small fan on it and now it doesn't shut down every 10 minute when I play a game. IT does it once in an hour.
And the chip is now cool, so the problem may have started there and now it has corruped my video card in some kind of way.
The games works fine. But every now and then it shuts down or got a crash.
Don't know what to do.
Thanks!

I've run memtest86 and found no errors.
So, I have no idea what is causing the shutdown, but the good news is it's not happen that often.

Maybe ask your friend to borrow you a quality PSU (400W or something) and test the system to see if you still get random shutdowns

It's nice to be important but it's more important to be nice...
