I am trying to help my brother with his computer. I did the system restore but to complete it I need the cd key which he can't find. What I would like to do is change the os. How can uninstall 98 and install windows xp? Thanks for the help.

The cd key should be on a label which is attached to the computer case...
Being a compaq unit it should be stuck on the side or tha back of the outside case...
If you wish to install xp you will need to do 1 of the two things.
Run the xp install and choose the upgrade option, but I would strongly advise against that procedure...
The best way is to save all the data you cant afford to loose, and wipe the entire drive clean and than reformat in NTFS and install XP from scratch....Refered to as a clean install...
IF IT AINT BROKE, DONT FIX ITA8N-SLI Deluxe
AMD X64 3500+ Wnchst
Corsair 2x512 DDR400 Dual Channel
GV-NX6600128D PCIX Graphics Card
Ggbyte GT Pro CPU Cooler
Zalman VF700-CU VGA Cool

"How can uninstall 98 and install windows xp?"
If you do an XP install, you will have the option of upgrading or repartitioning and doing a clean install.
Do yourself a favor BACKUP!!!

Make sure you setv the bios to boot from CDRom first, then make sure to delete ALL partitions, then make a new partition and format the drive in NTFS. That is ALL done with the win XP installation CD.
I hope there is at least 256MB Ram, because that is the minimum it will take to run XP properly. Any less and you'll have a really slow PC with lots of freezes and lockupsHopefully my advice will help you...Please post back with your results....thanks
