A buddy of mine dropped of his PC last night and said it had crapped out. I hooked it up and turned it on, it started to boot but when it got to the XP boot screen it went blank. The LED indicated that it was still getting power but just a blank screen. I tried to go into safe mode and it did the same thing, any ideas?

Open it up and see if you see anything visibly broken, loose, or just plain floating around in there........

Can you boot it into BIOS setup? See if the Harddrive is still listed. Your buddy might be lucky and it will just be the HDD connection is a bit out from the jolt, However, if the unit was running when it impacted the floor the shock just might have damaged the drive.

I read this post differently than others. I hear the buddy just left the PC with the poster. Don't think it was dropped.

Open the case anyway and check all connecions and reseat everything. While in there see if it has an add in video card. If it does, try the integrated graphics. If no joy try entering the BIOS screens.

Good point, OTH. Must have been the spelling that got me thinking literally "dropped".

Deadhorse, do you have a Windows XP CD? If so, run a repair of the OS.

Sorry about the confusion guys it's amazing how important one "f" can be.

Anyway, here's where I'm at, I did check inside the case and everything is solid. Next I used the XP OS disk and ran the recovery console, chkdsk /p, chkdsk /r and fixboot, this did not work it's still doing the same thing.

If I try doing a windows repair with the XP disk will his personal files be OK?

Well, if the computer will boot to a CD and stay running long enough to run those checks it sounds like software. The only hardware issue I might suspect is the PSU.

If your buddy has files to recover you should be able to get them off in a number of different ways. BTW, did you try booting to safe mode?
