System build question

February 10, 2009 at 12:50:11
Specs: Windows XP
I am building a system and saw a
recommendation here to bench test by
connecting MoBo, CPU, RAM, PSU & Video. I
did that but the only thing I see on the
monitor is black. The fans spin but no audio
beep (but I have no speaker). The system is
a supermicro X7DWA-N, 8 gig ram, dual quad
intel cores and an Nvidia 5400 graphic card.
So how do I do this test?

If you had read closely, the recommendation for benchtesting is to use one stick of RAM. And it would help if you had listed more detail about your specs. We have no idea which CPUs, which RAM, which video card (5400?). You need a hell of a good PSU to run a server type setup with dual quad-core CPUs & I believe you MUST use fully buffered RAM.

I'm curious what you're gonna do with such a pricey setup?

EDIT: according to Crucial, fully buffered, ECC only!

Sorry about missing the 1 point about 1 stick of ram. I took my ram recommendation from the supermicro site. It is this:2GB 800MHz DDR2 ECC Fully Buffered CL5 DIMM. It is fully buffered ECC.
The CPU's are: EU80574KJ060N XEON E5420 QC LGA771 2.5 INT-MP CHIP
The PSU is an antec 650 watt that came with the case the Titan 650.
The graphics card is the Nvidia 5400. Eventually I plan to upgrade to the 1700.
For now I will be installing Photoshop CS4 Professional for video editing and photography processing. I may or may not depending on work that comes my way eventually switch to or add Avid to the mix.

I don't know what a 5400 is? I know it's not a GeForce. Do you mean a Quadro FX540?
