I have a removable HDD rack with two ATA HDDs in caddies which I want to use to alternate drive image backups. Both are configured as Primary slaves. Is it safe to hot swap them, or is there software which is needed for this?

You can't Hot-Swap, but you can swap them with the system shutdown. Only SCSI drives with a controller can be Hot-Swaped.

If you want Swappable Hard drives look at getting some USB 2.0 enclosures. And if your computer doesn't have usb 2.0 then a pci usb 2.0 card.
USB 2.0 enclosure $27 shipped us

PCI USB 2.0 controller card $20 shipped us

I have drive enclosure and a 4+1 pci card. If you ask me it's as fast having the drive inside the computer.

Mike,
Chad makes an excellent point, having it installed speeds up the process dramatically. USB enclosures are very handy if you're working on multiple computers or if you need to take data off site but they're VERRRRRYYY slow! If you want the best of both worlds you'll need a firewire enclosure.

You CAN hot swap IDE drives if you have the disk mounted in a removable caddie and use software such as swap manager. http://www.softhelp.cc
USB2.0 and Firewire enclosures are an alternative, but a lot slower. They do have the advantage of being able to be used on almost any computer - so if portability is important its the way to go.
