Have an Acer Aspire 5315 laptop. Am trying to test the power socket for the prescence of a voltage when connected to the charger as the laptop only powers on with the battery and not with mains power. Suspect the jack socket. Where do you put the multimeter probe for the earth connection in order to test the voltage.

You might remove the battery and measure for the presence of the battery charging voltage.
