at work we got asked by a client if we could share a usb drive through a usb hub to 3 computers.

i know this wont work. i presume its because the usb acts like a bus to the computer.

but hypotheticaly if we used gender benders on the hub what would stop it?
been nagging me all day i should know it but just cant quite place my finger on it

Of course it will work. As long as the USB device has a drive letter assignment, it can be shared.

I think what the OP is trying to do is plug a drive into a USB hub then plug the three computers into the same hub in order to share the drive. If that i the case then no, it wont work.

Howeve you can share the drive as a shared drive over the Ethernet network.

yeah it was three computers into a usb hub.

it was a stupid question and seams like every one else knows it wont work but dosent know why.

the more i think about it the more i think because a usb is a sort of bus that if two pcs where conected using it they would both send info down the bus and get garbage back. also think it could be potentialy dangerous because the usb line carrys power and it will short if two pcs where attached to it

Why it wont work is simple. With USB one end of the cable is a client and the other end is a host. A computer is a host and a USB hub is a host except for the cable that plugs into the computer. To plug a cable from a computer directly into one of the hub ports you are connecting two hosts together.

The same as connecting to computers together with an Cat5 patch cable, you need a crossover cable to make it work. You can get USB cables that do a similar job but they are expensive. They wouldn't work in this situation because you would have the client, the hard disk, trying to communicate with three different hosts. You can have three different clients communicating with the same host but not the other way round.

They do make gizmo's that allow such use. Expensive.

MUCH easier and cheaper to just share it.

"Best Practices", Event viewer, host file, perfmon, are in my top 10
