strange Windows XP boot issue

Specs: Windows XP, AMD 6000+/2GB Ram
my machine will not boot with the network cable plugged in?? it will turn on without the cable but then does not boot into wilndows, it just switches off when the logo is on?

I can sometimes manage to get it on ok, but then i have to leave it on for days. can boot into safe mode but not with networking

Thanks for letting us know. If you have a question, let us know that too & list your complete system specs while you're at it, plus anything else that might be helpful. For instance, did the system work at one time with the cable plugged in? Did you make any software or hardware changes recently? Did you tamper with the BIOS settings?
